Special adviser release report on Aboriginal child-welfare

BC’s Children’s Ministry says it’s already working on almost half of the 85 recommendations made in a special adviser’s report on how to overhaul the province’s Aboriginal child-welfare system.

Grand Chief Ed John’s report calls for reducing the need for Indigenous kids and youth to go into care, increasing support to help keep families together and better access to legal services.

Premier Christy Clark’s government has faced fierce criticism as the portion of aboriginal kids in care has increased over the past decade, from 50 per cent in 2006 to 61% this year.

The ministry says recommendations it’s currently tackling include regular meetings with Metis and First Nations leaders, recruiting Indigenous people to work in the ministry and better informing Indigenous people about the child-welfare system.
