The RCMP has released a statistic that shows aboriginal perpetrators are responsible for 70% of solved murders of aboriginal women.
Mary Teegee is a representative with the Minister’s Advisory Council for Aboriginal Women as well as a director with the Carrier-Sekani Family Services.
She says the statistic takes the focus away from the root causes of violence against women.
She also says the trauma of residential schools can’t be ignored.
Teegee continues the call for a national inquiry, saying it’s needed to systemically and methodically look into the issue of violence.
