Stephen Harper says his Conservatives and their supporters gave everything they had to give in the election and he told those gathered in Calgary that they have no regrets.
The Conservatives were reduced to opposition status and Harper intends to step down as its leader as a result, although he didn’t mention that in his speech.
Harper says Canadians have elected a Liberal government, a result he says they accept without hesitation.
Harper took full responsibility for the disappointing result, but says the party will continue on.
Harper extended his congratulations to both Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and NDP leader Tom Mulcair.
