New housing is on the way for the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Smithers.
The Town and BC Government are partnering to build 24 modular housing units that will provide 24/7 support for residents along with a meal plan and connection to community-based healthcare.
Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the supports will be key to helping people transition into longer-term housing.
The new development will be constructed at 3896 Railway Avenue on land owned by the Town of Smithers and will be operated by Smithers Community Services.
The next step for the housing units is the development permit process, including site planning, building design, and working with the neighbours to ensure any concerns are addressed.
Bachrach says he’s hopeful that the development will be up and running as soon as possible, although the process does take some time.
