A federal bill was tabled earlier today which would result in a national freeze on selling, transferring and importing handguns in Canada.
While this bill would not completely ban handguns in Canada, it does put a limit on the amount of them that can be available within the country.
In addition, the Bill C-21 would also: instate harsher penalties for gun smugglers and traffickers, revoke the licenses of people who have a criminal history involving harassment or domestic violence, and require anyone who is considered a threat to themselves or others, to give their gun to the police.
Initially, the government floated the idea of discussing similar legislation with all provinces individually, but decided that national action would be more effective.
Recent shootings south of the border, which have tragically filled headlines in recent weeks, fueled the introduction of the new bill.
