A group of Tahltan elders have set up a blockade to halt mine exploration in the Sheslay River Valley northwest of Telegraph Creek.
The elders have the support of the Tahltan Central Council president Chad Day and are opposed to Doubleview Capital’s drilling operation on the company’s Hat Project.
Day says the valley is an important cultural, spiritual and traditional use area for the Tahltan noting there are grave sites which hold the remains of many Tahltan clan members.
The president of the company behind the project says they have a five year permit for exploration and drilling issued by the province after they met the requirements to consult with the Tahltan.
But day says that consultation process hasn’t been adequate.
Days says the Tahltan has been very clear the Sheslay is not open to major industrial development.
But day says both the company and the province are ignoring them.
Doubleview says they are reviewing their options in light of the blockade.
