Telkwa mayor says they can’t afford their share of the water tower project

The news from the weekend that both the province and federal governments will be chipping in money for Telkwa’s water tower is bitter sweet for their mayor.

Darcy Repen says they were very happy receiving a call from the province that funding had been approved for their project.

Although, Mayor Repen was disappointed once they found out they have to contribute a third of the $2.5-million project, instead of the hopeful 17%.

He says that Telkwa contributes a lot to the province’s economy and get very little in return.

Repen says they’re now exploring options to get more funding to bring down the amount they need to chip in.

He says they’re still moving ahead in getting the project ready for construction, saying he’s confident everything will all fall in place on time.

Repen also announced he will not run in the Stikine riding as an Independent, saying he wants to solely focus on Telkwa.
