Tension crack halts Site C dam construction

A 400-metre tension crack has halted construction of a haul road near the future location of the Site C Dam in northeastern B.C.

BC Hydro says the crack opened up during construction of the road that will be used in excavation of the north bank of the Peace River valley to create stable slopes for eventual dam construction.

It says tension cracks are not unexpected in the area, but this particular crack is significant due to its length of nearly half a kilometre.
Road construction workers have been reassigned while BC Hydro and its contractor monitor stability around the tension crack and determine how to continue soil removal.
