Transport Canada is giving the City of Terrace $25,000 for fencing along the railway tracks that run through the city.
The funding will cover approximately 80 per cent of the total $31,000 cost.
The fence will run from the Staples to the George Little House and will match the fencing that’s already along portions of the tracks.
Mayor Carol Leclerc says she hopes the fence will deter people from crossing the tracks.
Last year two people were killed within six days of each other trying to cut across the tracks as a shortcut. Terrace’s transportation master plan includes recommendations for a pedestrian overpass in the area.
Currently, the only way across the tracks safely is via the Sande overpass, which adds a significant amount time.
