The BC government is appointing two new provincial court judges, including a Terrace-based lawyer.
Karen Whonnock, a Wet’suwet’en First Nation member, has been an associate judge of the Colville Tribal Court and has worked with the Legal Services Society.
Whonnock received her law degree from the University of Toronto in 1999 as well as a master’s in law from Osgoode Hall at York University in 2003.
She is currently a doctoral candidate at Royal Roads University researching Aboriginal youth incarceration rates in Canada.
Whonnock, who will serve Williams Lake and other communities, replaces Judge Marguerite Church who was appointed to the Supreme Court of BC.
The province has also appointed Robin McQuillan who will serve in the Vancouver and Fraser regions of the court.
