Terrace mayor Carol Leclerc says she’s spoken with the demonstrators in front of city hall, but says there’s little the city can do.
Mayor Leclerc says housing is a provincial issue, but she adds once the city’s homelessness task group completes its report, the city can take the findings and lobby the province for more support.
Kishone Tony Roy is the CEO of the BC Non-Profit Housing Association, he says the lack of affordable housing can be blamed to chronic underfunding by both the provincial and federal governments.
But says the problem is now being recognized and cities can implement a number of initiatives to attract federal funding for affordable housing.
He adds it’s up to each city on how they go about attracting new funding earmarked for affordable housing.
Camps of homeless people have sprouted in Victoria and Abbotsford, and mayor Leclerc says she’s concerned a similar situation may happen in Terrace.
She says city staff have been directed to look into options for space if the need arises.
