The Canadian Forces called in Terrace Search and Rescue crews for a difficult recovery operation near Dease Lake recently.
A float plane operated by Tsyata Air had crashed into a rock face Friday July 15th, killing the pilot and lone occupant. With the crash site about 200 feet down the side of a
steep plateau, 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron activated Terrace SAR to recover the pilot’s body.
A rope rescue specialist crew from Terrace along with an RCMP officer were transported to an area above the crash site by helicopter Sunday. The team was lowered to the site and was able to safely recover the pilot’s remains from the wreckage. The crew then used the rope system to take the body and themselves back to the helicopter.
The crew and body were then flown to Terrace where they were met by the BC Coroners Service.
The name of the pilot has not been released.
