The CEO of the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation has retired from his position.
Outgoing CEO Garry Merkel began working at the TNDC almost from the beginning of the corporation in 1985, but he says family and life commitments are pulling him away.
Over the years, he says he’s proud of how the TNDC has developed a strong corporate culture.
He has some advice for other First Nations communities interested in following the footsteps of the TNDC to success.
While Merkel’s last day is tomorrow, he will remain with the TNDC on a variety of capacities.
Merkel says he wants to see through a project that will bring a fibre backbone from Highway 16 to the Alaska Highway.
He hopes the project, that will bring cellular and Internet service to the region, will be completed by the end of the year.
Peter Arendt is the new CEO and comes from a mining background.
