It’s a significant step for the Tsilhqot’in.
The Nation has enacted its first law on the 1,900 square kilometres of Title land it was awarded in a landmark Supreme Court of Canada ruling last summer.
The TNG has enacted the 1989 Nemiah Declaration which sets out the rules for how the nation will govern the lands and manage access to the area and its resource.
The declaration, originally sought to protect the area from clear-cut forestry, banned commercial logging, mining, and road building.
Roger William is the Vice-Chair of the Tsilqhot’in National Government and Chief of the Xeni Gwet’in.
William says the declaration is the voice of Tsilhqot’in elders and comes directly from traditions, laws, and practices which have been around for centuries.
