The BC Treaty Commission says an 11th hour decision by the BC Government to nix the appointment of George Abbott as Chief Commissioner raises questions about BC’s commitment to the treaty process.
Current Chief Commissioner Sophie Pierre says she learned of the cancelled appointment as members of the BCTC were just meeting to work out Abbott’s coming transition into the role.
Pierre says it’s not a good way for the government to effect reconciliation.
Pierre says Premier Christy Clark needs to explain the decision.
Pierre says she hopes the decision won’t affect First Nations like the Kitselas and Kitsumkalum which are currently in the home stretch of final treaty agreements.
