After avoiding the topic during meetings with First Nations leaders in Ottawa yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has finally issued a comment on the situation unfolding between RCMP and Unist’ot’en land defenders.
Trudeau says he is “not happy” with the RCMP’s response, saying that “it’s not an ideal situation”.
In his comments, the Prime Minister compared the situation to centuries gone by, saying that, in the past, Indigenous people would not be consulted and projects would just happen.
He says that that is not the way things should be handled in 2019.
Despite this, Trudeau says he is not planning a visit to the camps, nor to Wet’suwet’en territory during his BC visit.
Trudeau is in Kamloops today to discuss the economy and job creation at a public town hall.
