The Tribal Chair of the Tsilhqot’in National Government, whose community battled wildfires for much of the summer, urged chiefs at the BC Assembly of First Nations AGM to have an emergency plan.
Tl’etinqox Chief Joe Alphonse says summer wildfires constituted a crisis but, through that crisis, Alphonse says they achieved harmony.
Alphonse told those gathered of the pressure to evacuate his community, but after their 2010 evacuation experience, he said never again.
Alphonse says he was shocked by the pushback of government when they chose to defy the evacuation order.
While he says he took a lot of heat for standing his ground, Alphonse says he would do it all again in a heartbeat.
