The Heiltsuk Nation says an American tug boat and fuel barge are in distress in its territorial waters.
According to the Heiltsuk, the Jake Shearer, and articulated tug and barge, has lost power approximately 2 nautical miles south of Goose Island Sunday night in gusty and rough conditions.
Officials say they’re concerned the vessel may be carrying a full load of oil products.
The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Gordon Reid is en route and will try to attach a tow line when it arrives at the scene at approximately 7:30.
The incident is a painful reminder for the Heiltsuk ion last year’s devastating spill by the Nathan E. Stewart, a similar barge and tug which ran aground, leaking 100,000 litres of diesel into Seaforth Channel.
The Heiltsuk Tribal Council says its local vessels, including Guardian Watchmen, will be on scene when it is safe to do so.
