The tug has been lifted from the waters just west of Bella Bella.
Heiltsuk Nation says water is now being drained from the tug before it is lifted on the barge and then taken away.
Chief Councillor Maryilyn Slett says everyone is relieved that they could finally reach this step.
It’s been over one month since the tug and empty fuel barge went around. Weather delayed the cleanup and recovery efforts throughout the days.
Chief Slett says next steps include shoreline assessments, environmental monitoring and cleanup, as well as an independent investigation by the Heiltsuk Nation into the accident.
