U.N. calls for inquiry into missing, murdered indigenous women

A United Nations watchdog is urging Canada to launch a national inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.
The UN Human Rights Committee says it’s concerned that aboriginal women are disproportionately affected by life-threatening violence, homicide, and disappearances in Canada.
The body also calls on government to coordinate police responses across the country to prevent murders and disappearances and address the root causes of violence against indigenous women and girls.
The federal government has refused to call an national public inquiry on the issue, despite calls from First Nations and other levels of government.
The committee also called on Canada to investigate alleged human rights abuses by Canadian mining companies abroad and has red-flagged the scope of the Harper government’s anti-terror legislation Bill C-51.
The recommendations came in the Human rights Committee’s scheduled review of seven countries.
