Union of BC Indian Chiefs President, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip issued a statement yesterday condemning the actions of RCMP in Wet’suwet’en territory.
In the statement, the Grand Chief said that the RCMP’s use of intimidation, threats, and the forceful removal of the Unist’ot’en land defenders had him concerned for the safety of the Nation.
His statement was also critical of the government for blatantly ignoring the precedent set by the BC Supreme Court’s ruling in the Delgamuukw case.
In closing, he called on Canada, BC, and Coastal GasLink to respect the rights of the Unist’ot’en and Gidimt’en people on their unceded lands.
