Uncertainty continues to surround the salmon industry, even as forecasters predict strong returns on the horizon.
With this year expected to be a strong year in the four year salmon migration cycle, the DFO are predicting sockeye returns in the Fraser River to be as high as 14 million.
However, according to the Watershed Watch Salmon Society, the numbers could actually be as low as 5.3 million.
According to the society, overfishing and warmer climates have the actual numbers clouded in obscurity.
Consultant Greg Taylor says that in order to get a true calculation of the numbers, the DFO needs to stop guessing and change the way commercial fisheries operate.
