USW withdraws from Lakeland Mills inquest

The United Steelworkers is withdrawing from the Lakeland Mills inquest in Prince George.

The Lakelands Mills explosion killed two workers in 2012.

Stephen Hunt, District 3 Director for the USW says instead of the Coroner’s Inquest, there should be a public inquiry into the explosion.

He says the mandate of the Coroner’s Inquest is too narrow and beyond the scope of what an inquiry can investigate.

Hunt also questions the inquest’s decision to hold the Lakeland Mills inquest first, despite that explosion taking place three months after an explosion at Babine Forest Products in Burns Lake.

He’s critical of WorkSafeBC and the Workers Compensation Board for failing to act after the first explosion at Burns Lake, and that they won’t be held responsible under the inquest.
