A Vancouver marine mammal hospital says its first rescued harbour seal pup of the year has been flown in from Fanny Bay, on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre says the tiny male pup, which was found by the owner of a local RV park, has been assessed as just a few days old.

The centre says at this time of year, newborn pups are often left to rest while their mothers forage for food and adult female sealse unlikely to rejoin their pups if there is human activity nearby.

The pup has been named Lionel Messi after the star Argentine soccer player.
