Vancouver Island communities get funding to upgrade Tsunami warning system

Residents in Port Refrew and Pacheedaht First Nation are getting half-a-million dollars for Tsunami preparation.

The province says the money will go towards upgrading the sirens that can be activated remotely, and reach a further distance.

Officials say the technology could also potentially warn before earthquake actually occurs, giving everyone a chance to head to a safer area.

The $550,000 is part of a $80-million investment for emergency preparedness and mitigation.
