Vital communications tower threatened by wildfires

Emergency Management BC says a vital communications link in the Chilcotin could be at risk from nearby wildfires.

The province says the Riske Creek communications tower southwest of Williams Lake carries landline telephone, internet, cell phone, and data services to a wide swath of territory between Riske Creek and Bella Coola.

If the tower is damaged, officials say BC Hydro and Telus crews will be sent to make repairs once it’s safe to do so.

Emergency Management BC says it’s been in contact with the Regional Districts and First Nations communities.

EMBC says it has the ability to support alternate communication methods if the tower is compromised.
