Vulnerable children start behind and stay behind peers

The latest report from B.C.’s children’s rights watchdog says vulnerable children in the province start life behind their peers and stay there.

The report by Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond and co-author Dr. Perry Kendall, the provincial health officer, says life remains challenging for vulnerable children, especially for those in government care and aboriginal children and youth.

Turpel-Lafond says fewer teens are getting pregnant and fewer of them are involved in serious crime.

But she says it’s worrisome that aboriginal kids are 12 times more likely to be in government care and almost 60 per cent of youth in care don’t graduate from high school.
