A book titled Shared Histories, which highlights the early relationship between Smithers and the Witsuwit’en Nation will be released this weekend.
Author Tyler McCreary has spent the last 3 years performing more than 50 interviews and digging through archives to put together an indepth look in to the beginnings of the relationship between the two communities.
Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach calls the book an important contribution in understanding the town’s history.
Bachrach says the book takes the first step towards documenting the Nation’s history with the town of Smithers.
Walk to Witset
Residents will be walking the 32 kilometers from Smithers to Witset this weekend in celebration of the release of the book and of the community’s shared history.
Mayor Bachrach says the event is a symbol of the two groups walking together in to the future.
Bachrach will be among those departing from the Bulkley Valley Museum in Smithers at 6 in the morning on Saturday.
