The cleanup of an old pulp mill on Watson Island near Prince Rupert is nearing completion.
The work began in 2015 and was expected to take about two years to complete.
Mayor Lee Brain says he’s pleased with the cleanup process so far.
He says decommissioning the site will allow it to be re-purposed so Watson Island can once again contribute to the city’s economy.
The mill was shutdown in 2004 and attempts to restart it were unsuccessful.
The city notes that 95% of the items being clean up from the site is being recycled.
The decommissioning of the site is expected to wrap up this fall.
