The Heiltsuk Nation says oncoming bad weather is forcing the small boats that are assisting with the clean up to return to shore.

More diesel still needs to be emptied from the tug’s leaking fuel tanks.

The process is on hold until conditions improve. Officials are concerned the storm may move the tug, making recovery efforts more difficult once it resumes.

Earlier reports suggested Kirby Offshore Marine, the owner of the tug boat and barge, gave $100,000 to the Helitstuk to help with the recovery response.

The Heiltsuk say that is false and they’re requesting the company help offset the costs of the clean up.

It was last Thursday morning when the tug and empty fuel barge went aground on Edge Reef in the Seaforth Channel.
