Wildfire concerns not over yet

Despite cooler weather and some rain in the north, wildfires are still a major concern in the province.

Ryan Turcot is a Fire Information Officer with the province and says there are currently 155 fires burning throughout the province, with 113 caused by lightning and 31 caused by people.

The province-wide campfire ban continues to be in place, except for Haida Gwaii and the so-called Fog Zone on Vancouver Island.

The recent wet weather in parts of the north has led to lower fire danger ratings, but Tucot says it may only be a short-term trend, with warmer and drier weather in the forecast.

Turcot says the early start of the lightning season has seen the province respond to 1,119 fires so far.
