Wildfire-related violation fees go up today

If you go into the woods today, you’d better know all the rules.

The Ministry of Forests says dramatically increased fines for a variety of wildfire-related violations take effect today, giving this province some of the highest fines in Canada.

One of the major changes includes tripling of the penalty for ignoring a fire restriction, such as a campfire ban.

It soars from $345 to just over $1,100, while failing to properly extinguish a burning substance, such as a cigarette, will net a fine of $575.
