Wildfire status: Puntzi Lake and statistics

The fire information office says a wildfire about 130km west of Williams Lake has forced the evacuation of 30 properties in the Puntzi Lake area, and residents of several others are on alert to leave at any moment.

Fire information officer Emily Epp says the Puntzi Lake fire has more than doubled in size in 24 hours, and is now about 12 square kilometres.

She says the crews are waiting for more heavy equipment and aircraft to support their efforts.

Residents of the Cariboo Regional District are reminded to register for the Cariboo Chilcotin Emergency Notification System by visiting the Cariboo Regional District at cariboord.ca.

The Puntzi Lake fire is one of 201 wildfires burning across the province.

Firefighters from Ontario have joined B.C. crews battling the blazes, and help is also on the way from Australia.

19 new fires were reported yesterday.

Since April 1, there have been 945 wildfires, burning over 230,000 hectares.

Compared to last year, there were only 439 wildfires that burned 9,000 hectares.

There are 20 major wildfires of note, with eight involving evacuation orders or alerts.
