Yesterday, Williams Lake city council decided to pull the shelter and bench at a bus stop at Boitanio Park.
In an unanimous vote, council agreed to a request by the city’s transit committee to remove the overhead shelter and bench at the park.
The park was recently in the news because that’s where a youth had his BMX bike stolen at gunpoint, and it was also where an anti-violence rally was held a few weeks ago.
Mayor Walt Cobb says there have been some issues with intoxicated people hanging out at the shelter when the weather was bad.
He says he’s not concerned that removing the shelter will only force those people to another part of town, saying there are other covered areas within in the park that they’ll likely move to.
Cobb says so far only one person has come to him complaining about the removal, saying they need the shelter while carrying their groceries during rainy days.
The shelter is expected to be dismantled by the end of today.
