BC’s Public Safety Minister Mike Morris says he doesn’t think organized crime is behind recent troubles in Williams Lake.
A shooting at a home early Monday caused a lockdown of local schools in the city. RCMP say the residence was formerly occupied by someone claiming to be a gang member.
Morris, a former RCMP officer, was in the city to meet with municipal and First Nations leaders last week.
Williams Lake Mayor Walt Cobb says two groups from outside the community have been in an ongoing turf war possibly involving drugs.
Cobb says those responsible for the violence are a core group of prolific offenders. numbering between 12 and 20.
The Public Safety Minister says his government recently announced more spending to tackle gang activity.
Cobb, who has called on both provincial and federal governments for help, says his city will be making sure that some of that money comes to the Cariboo.
