A welcome gateway into Xeni Gwet’in Declared Aboriginal title land has been vandalized.
The Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government found out about the vandalism on Monday, while the RCMP were notified last Thursday.
The gateway marks the beginning of the Declared Aboriginal title area.
Beside the road, visitors can find signs outlining maps, information about the area, and reference to further information.
Chief Roger William of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation says they’ll take time to assess the damage and decide the next step.
In a statement, the Xeni Gwet’in First Nations Government calls the vandalism “disheartening.”
The gateway is about 25km west of Chilko Lake, and took five years of planning and fundraising to complete.
