A national walk for youth mental health kicked off the west coast leg of its journey on Haida Gwaii this week.
RCMP say Hope in the Darkness is a national call to action for police officers to walk with youth for youth to create awareness to the issue of Youth Mental Health.
The initiative was spearhead by Sergeant Kevin Redsky of the Anishinabek Police Service in Ontario, in partnership with the BC RCMP Indigenous Policing Services (IPS) and First Nation Policing Program (FNPP).
The walk began April 1, 2018 at the easternmost point of Canada at Cape Spear, St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Our members are pleased to participate in this worthy initiative to spark conversation. Youth mental health is a priority for the BC RCMP, and part of the divisional youth strategy.
BC RCMP IPS Officer in-Charge A/Inspector Dee Stewart added, our First Nations Police Program members and youth officers provide resources, programs, and support in communities throughout BC to help bring awareness and education to youth around issues of mental health and attempt to dispel any stigma. By equipping youth with knowledge we can bestow them with confidence and skills to make them stronger.
The west coast leg of the walk is scheduled to arrive in Queen Charlotte Thursday and continue from Prince Rupert to Terrace Friday, May 18-21.
