Yukon makes National Aboriginal Day a paid holiday

Yukon is adding a holiday to the territorial calendar and beginning next month, will join the Northwest Territories in recognizing National Aboriginal Day.

Politicians on both sides of the house voted unanimously to adopt the holiday to be celebrated each June 21st.

Community Services Minister John Streicker says making the day a paid holiday sends a signal to the rest of Canada that National Aboriginal Day is the right thing to do.

Some businesses have expressed concerns about the financial impact of an additional paid day off, but there are no estimates on how much it would cost the private sector.
