Similar to Terrace, Smithers has had a problem with downtown safety.
After a consultation involving town officials, RCMP, merchants and public feedback, a meeting has been called to restart the citizens on patrol program.
In previous years, the program had a large number of volunteers who drove around town and called RCMP if they came across anything suspicious.
But due to a combo of deaths, people moving and apathy, the program shut down but the meeting aims to turn that around.
It will take place Thursday at the Sunshine Inn and will start at 7 p.m.
It’s open to all who are interested in joining the program, RCMP will attend the information session, as will the newly hired community safety and law officer Perry Lewin along with town officials.
The call to revive the program came this past summer after police met with business owners and it’s been noted that 20 volunteers or more would get the program started again.
Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill said that something needs to be done to combat the uptick in property crime in the downtown core and other areas and that she is glad the patrol is being revived.
