Roughly 24.6 million tonnes of cargo passed through the Port of Prince Rupert last year, marking a decline in volume for the second straight year.
According to the Prince Rupert Port Authority, the 2 percent decline is a result of supply chain disruptions, rapidly changing energy demands, and geopolitical tensions.
But, despite the volatility, they say the Port also made considerable strides toward developing a more resilient and sustainable gateway.
CEO Shaun Stevenson says the decline shows the port needs to continue to evolve and adapt through the diversification and expansion of their facilities.
Despite the drop in cargo volume, cruise operations saw 40,998 passengers in 2022, a 230 percent increase over 2019 levels, marking the Port’s best cruise season in over a decade.
