An independant audit conducted by BC’s Auditor General found the province’s commercial vehicle safety levels to be less than ideal.
According to a report released today, the audit found that 19 percent of the nearly 300 fatal collisions per year during the past decade involved heavy commercial vehicles.
This is the case despite those heavy commercial vehciles, such as dump trucks, container trucks, and semi-trailers, making up just 3 percent of registered vehicles in the province.
As a result, the Auditor General is making several recommendations, including: government taking clear responsibility over road safety education, opening funding options to commercial training courses, reviewing the standards for commercial licensing, improving analasys, and opening government inspection facilities.
The provincial government’s goal for commercial road safety is zero fatal collisions.
