A bear that conservation officer says was a fearless garbage eater was killed in Thornhill this past Wednesday.
The grizzly was hanging around the copper river motel on highway 15 west and RV campers at the motel said it showed no fear of humans.
Officer Kevin Nixon says the teenage bear was healthy and wouldn’t be scared off so, officers had no option but to kill the grizzly. He says this may be the same bear that was caught on video out in copper river estates a few days ago. He says the fact the bear was enjoying a buffet wasn’t the bears fault. He says the fault lies with humans who allow bears to get into their garbage.
Given the bears age and size, Nixon says it was old enough to be on its own and it isn’t unusual that officers encounter young bears who get kicked out by mom and get into trouble while trying to establish new territory for themselves.
Nixon says officers will be canvassing the area for any further bear sightings and a bear trap put out at the copper river motel will remain in place.
