Police and conservation officers are trying to catch a problem black bear that’s been causing trouble in a Haida Gwaii community.
RCMP say the bear has been spotted a number of times in and around Old Massett. While no specific incidents have been detailed, Mounties say the animal has placed the public at risk on several occasions and has come close to those not able to protect themselves
Traps have been set, but so far the bear has managed to elude RCMP, the Conservation Officer Service, and the DFO.
Police are also concerned about reports of residents carrying guns while they are out in the village. RCMP are reminding the public about the laws around carrying firearms and warning people not to attempt capturing the bear.
RCMP say any sightings of the bear should be reported to the authorities.
