Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says the current name of the riding will stay…for at least the next couple of years.
Cullen initially took the results of a Facebook poll calling for a change to the constituency’s name and decided on Skeena-Pacific Northwest.
But after an ear-full from constituents, Cullen again consulted people in the riding about what they wanted to do.
The poll, which ended Tuesday shows that 64% of 662 respondents support a name that better reflects the people and geography of the riding. But, more importantly, according to Cullen, a lot of people told him they didn’t feel part of the process and didn’t have an opportunity to think about the options.
So with that, Cullen says Skeena-Bukley Valley name will stay and his office will invite further and proper consultation from residents.
“Frankly, I hit ‘send’ too quickly and missed the mark on properly involving constituents in this decision,” Cullen says in a news release. “I’ve always believed the best decisions are based on good consultation and people told me that my process this time just didn’t meet that high standard.”
Cullen says an Elections Canada review of all riding names and boundaries after the October 2019 federal election provides a timely opportunity for Skeena-Bulkley Valley residents to consider what they’d like to call their Northwest riding.
