The Delegated Aboriginal Agencies are commending new resolutions put forward by the Assembly of First Nations regarding Indigenous child and family well-being.
The statement was released via the Directors’ Forum this morning and calls the resolution a critical step in the care of Indigenous children.
The resolution calls for the Federal government to co-create legislation with Indigenous Nations, the National advisory committee, and legal experts to develop new legislation through the lens of Indigenous peoples.
Today, 61 percent of BCs child welfare population are Aboriginal, while only 9 percent of children in the province are.
The aim of the legislation is to correct this by restoring Indigenous nations rights to care for and have control over their children.
Forum Chair Mary Teegee calls it a historic step in the right direction.
