Efforts continue to rescue a heavily laden fuel barge in trouble off the BC Central Coast.
The US-owned Jake Shearer tug became detached from its fuel barge southwest of Bella Bella in high winds and rough seas Sunday afternoon.
The Canadian Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre confirms the barge contains 3.5 million litres or diesel and over 460,000 litres of gasoline.
Coast Guard vessel Gordon Reid has arrived on scene with the Canadian Coast Guard’s Cape St. James on its way to lend assistance as well.
The barge is anchoring in place just off of Goose Island and is not moving.
Only a year ago, the Nathan E. Stewart, a similar tug and barge ran aground off the Central Coast, fouling the water with up 110,000 litres of fuel.
