Williams Lake resident Catharina Callawaert says people in the city aren’t panicking, but they are preparing as wildfires rage near the community.
Callawaert says the gas station she was at Friday night ran out of regular fuel and was selling premium at regular prices as people stocked up just in case. She says it was the same for some store shelves as Wal Mart was running low on water and juice when she went in.
The City of Williams Lake has issued an evacuation alert for people living along South Lakeside Drive from the Seventh Day Adventist Academy east to the City boundary. While it is not an evacuation order, the city has asked residents there to consider self-evacuating.
An emergency reception centre has been established at Lake City Secondary (Carson Campus) for those wishing to self-evacuate.
The City of Williams Lake has activated its Emergency Operations Centre and has asked residents to keep a close watch on social media, radio, and television for the latest on the wildfire situation.
