Strong winds and high temperatures this weekend could create the perfect conditions to start — and spread — wildfires around B-C, so the wildfire service is urging campers and hikers to use extreme caution.
Of the 873 fires recorded since April 1st, officials say 403 have been caused by humans, and the wildfire risk is expected to climb quickly as record-breaking heat parches the backcountry.
Haley Williams of the Northwest Fire Centre says the weekend won’t be too bad, but next week will be hot and dry.
She says some areas are under an extreme fire hazard rating.
Campfire bans are in effect across most of the Coastal Fire Centre, except Haida Gwaii, and in two zones of the Northwest Fire Centre, while the Regional District of Central Okanagan has also prohibited campfires in all its municipalities and fire service areas.
