The North Coast will be home to one of four new Coast Guard lifeboat stations to be built in BC.
Hartley Bay will receive a station along with Nootka, Port Renfrew, and the Victoria area.
Members of the Gitga’at Nation were the first to respond to the Queen of the North ferry when it sank near their home community of Hartley Bay in 2006.
Federal fisheries minister Dominic Leblanc says each station will have the capacity to respond to spills and take part in search and rescue operations.
Leblanc has also floated the idea of forming an Indigenous coast guard auxiliary, but no details about the plan have been released.
