An important safehouse is coming to the Highway of Tears after a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday.
Carrier Sekani Family Services and Lake Babine Nation will come together to begin the project to build and operate the safehouse on the infamous stretch of Highway 16.
The facility will be built in the centre of Burns Lake and will house 23 occupants across 7 units.
The goal of the facility will be to provide shelter to women who need a safe environment and protection from family violence and any related risks.
With assistance from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Indigenous Services, the project has been in preplanning for the last 3 years.
